Your Webmaster recently had the pleasure of joining members of the Lichfield Association on a most interesting and informative visit to the workshop of Peter Collins Ltd in Melton Mowbray.
Later, we accompanied Peter on a visit to the chapel of nearby Oakham School where, 20 years ago, he built this striking (from both a visual and audio point of view) instrument.
The organ case is built from solid English oak and includes rich mouldings and applied decoration designed by Nicholas Plumley and carved by Derek Riley.
The stop list was conceived to embrace within it the demands of as much of the organ repertoire as possible, but the voicing definitely has an immediacy and brilliance characteristic of many German Baroque instruments. The lower manual controls the Great - visiting organists beware!
