Organ of the Month archive
(contains over 180 organs)
The church stands on a site hallowed for worship for more than 1000 years and contains one of the most important displays of medieval stained glass in the British Isles, currently the subject of a grant application to the Heritage Lottery Fund.
While the present organ was built by Geoffrey Coffin of Principal Pipe Organs in 1996, it incorporates pipework from the previous instrument here by Forster & Andrews and a second F&A organ from All Saints Pocklington, both of which date back to 1867.
The beautifully decorated case pipes, all of which speak, are from the original F & A organ and were re-gilded in 1996.
There have been two changes since 1996: a Great Gamba has been replaced with a Sesquialtera and a Nineteenth has repalce a Sw Voix Celeste. The organ has tracker action throughout and acquired its Cymbelstern from York Minster, following the latter organ's rebuild in 1994. There are monthly Friday lunchtime recitals here, see www.organrecitals.com .
You can hear Francis Jackson playing his own Fanfare in 1952 at York Minster as May 2018's Music of the Month.
