ORGAN OF THE MONTH 95: May 2010
Darlaston Parish Church houses a 3-manual instrument originally by Bishop & Son of London but of uncertain vintage. It was rebuilt by Reginald R Fisk of Wolverhampton in 1925 (when a Tuba was added) and subsequently altered by Hawkins (when, presumably, the Great reeds listed in the 1948 NPOR survey - including the Tuba - were removed, which seems a shame!). Extra couplers were added and also Pedal Organ extensions that have resulted in the curious feature of both a Pedal Flute 8ft and Major Flute 8ft. The original composition pedals were replaced with a piston system that is adjustable via three-position switches located in drawers under the stop jambs. The organ is located in a South Chancel chamber (see left photo) and is very much a product of its time, with subdued upperwork. It is currently in the care of David Gallichan.
