ORGAN OF THE MONTH 101: November 2010
This year's IAO Midlands Organ Day was based in Derby, during which delegates were privileged to visit St John the Evangelist to hear the results of a recently completed comprehensive overhaul by local builder Edmund Stow of this 1875 Father Willis organ. The organ had undergone major work in 1914 by the local firm of Adkins (when it was enlarged from 2- to 3-manuals) and in 1975 by Johnson (who returned it to 2-manuals and added new mixture work). Stow has renewed all the leatherwork and refurbished the console in the style of the original Willis. Tonally, the Willis pipework has been restored to its original sound and the 1975 additions have been modified. The result is impressive, and it was also interesting to hear Edmund Stow in conversation with Paul Hale discussing details of the work done.
