What were BOA members up to in 2022?
Date | |
12 Dec 22 | The new Flentrop organ at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire An exclusive invitation for BOA members from Daniel Moult (Head of Organ) allowed us to share in the Organ Dept’s end-of-term concert – and to see and hear the new organ by Flentrop Orgelbouw in the Organ Studio. |
19 Nov 22 | Annual Lunch with guest speaker Dr James Lancelot Members assembled in the Canons’ Dining Room of St Chad’s Cathedral to meet and listen to James Lancelot, for over thirty years Director of Music of Durham Cathedral, reminiscing about his life and work in church music, including as organ scholar of King's College, Cambridge. |
22 Oct 22 | Workshop of hymn-playing & recital Dr John Kitchen MBE, Edinburgh City Organist and renowned for the inspiring way in which he leads hymn singing from the organ, gave a hymn-playing masterclass before lunch. After lunch, we returned for John's recital on this fine Nicholson organ, the very last to be built by John Nicholson himself. |
3 Sep 22 | IAO MIDLANDS ORGAN DAY A most enjoyable day of talks (including by the Head Voicer of Harrison's, Andrew Scott), how to build a Continuo organ, a masterclass (BOA member Paul Hodgetts participating) and recitals by the Apollon Duo and Jonathan Scott. |
9 Jul 22 | AGM and annual recital After the essential formalities of the AGM, we were able to enjoy a recital by NICHOLAS FREESTONE (Worcester Cathedral) and afternoon tea. |
9 May 22 | 'Come and Play' with cheese & wine An opportunity for BOA members not only to enjoy a social evening, but also to play the cathedral organ. |
8 Mar 22 | BOA/RBC competition This event offered an opportunity for 1st and 2nd year students of the B Mus organ course at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire to compete for a cash prize of £250 from our Leonard Gibbons Fund. The result was a bravura evening of organ-playing in the form of four mini-recitals on the splendid Walker organ. Elie-Mae McGlone was the eventual winner. |
26 Feb 22 | Visit to Wolverhampton An opportunity to hear and play the newly-restored (by Michael Farley) organ in this city centre church. BOA member PETER MORRIS provided an overview of the project, which includes digital stops added to the Pedal division. This was followed by a visit to St Michael's Tettenhall and its Compton organ. |
24 Jan 22 | York revisited An opportunity to meet from the comfort of our own homes on a winter's evening! This was to hear more about the rebuilding of a 'Father' Willis organ in the church of St Denys, York: a project supported financially by BOA after our visit to the city for an 'organ crawl' in 2018. It was followed by a video (produced by the York association), ending with an opportunity to see & hear the organ being played via YouTube. |
